Canvasback
The Canvasback is the largest of the true pochards. This large diving duck is found only in North America where it is considered to be widespread. The Canvasback is not an aggressive species and will get along with other ducks in a mixed collection.
Closely related to the redhead and other members of the pochard group, care should be taken to prevent crossbreeding. Canvasbacks can be difficult to breed in captivity, birds are first year fertile, but often do not breed until they are 2-3 years of age. Breeding season begins in spring, nest are made on the ground in a nest box or under natural cover. Clutches consist of 6-8 eggs which are incubated or about 25 days. The ducklings are not difficult to raise, and have no special issues.
